(acrylic on canvas 36" x 36" embellished with
crystals, pearls, dimensional paint and gold leaf)

This beautiful mandala was commissioned in honor of a 50th Birthday Celebration that took place on Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands in April 2008 with eleven family members in attendance. The name (Pua Lani O Kaua'i) is literally heaven's flower of Kauai. The Flower of Life design is over six thousand years old and is constructed of multiple overlapping circles, with the center of each circle on the circumference of six surrounding circles of the same diameter. Throughout human history, it has symbolized perfect form, proportion and harmony. It is considered by many to be sacred geometry that depicts the fundamental forms of space and time, or to contain a type of Akashic Record of basic information of all living things.

For the recipient of this mandala, the painting will always recall memories of an auspicious occasion on the Garden Island with its fragrant blossoms, star-spangled nights, sandy beaches and surf as well as a joyful gathering of the clan that included zip lining over verdant rain forests and surfing lessons with champion Titus Kinimaka.

The above detail illustrates a portion of the embellishment that includes 117 cultured pearl cabochons, numerous Swarovski crystals, dimensional paint and blue variegated gold leaf. The canvas was gallery wrapped on 1-1/4" stretcher bars and required no frame.
